The American Board of Surgery in partnership with the ASMBS have announced the first form of board certification for surgeons in the United States who are engaged in the specialty of metabolic and bariatric surgery. The new FPD (Focused Practice Designation) is available to surgeons practicing in the specialty who can demonstrate their clinical expertise and ongoing commitment to continuing education, accreditation, and obtaining comprehensive knowledge of the specialty.

This detailed 8 hour Board Review Course will be held for surgeons who are interested in taking the FPD examination in April. This session will provide an overview of the FPD in metabolic and bariatric surgery including its history, the process for a surgeon to pursue FPD designation, and an overview of the knowledge assessment that will be administered for the first time on April 1, 2022.
